Glencoe is one of the most spectacular locations in Scotland. Surrounded by mountains, lochs and woodlands, Spring Croft is the perfect base for outdoor pursuits or just a beautiful place to relax and unwind.
The original croft cottage on this site was built in 1886. The datestone of the original cottage is embedded in the west facing gable end of the current building. The current cottage was built in 1992.
Tigh-Phuirt, which is pronounced 'Tie-Fist' (Also spelled Tigh A’ Phuirt, Tighpuirst & Tighphuirt....Not confusing at all!) means ‘house at the pier, port or harbour’. The old pier to which this name relates is just in front of the cottage.
Whether you're looking to make the most of what the 'outdoor activity capital of the UK' has to offer, or you're just looking for somewhere to chill out & enjoy mother nature, Spring Croft Cottage is the place to stay.
Walkers & hikers are spoilt for choice with Munros, mountains & hills as far as the eye can see. All abilities are catered for, local guides are available if needed.
The Ice Factor in Kinlochleven houses the tallest indoor ice climbing wall in the world & it's just a 15 minute drive from Spring Croft. Bouldering & climbing walls are also available.
Mountain bikers have 2 mountains to cycle on, Glencoe Mountain (a 20 minute drive) & the Nevis Range (a 40 minute drive). Road cyclists might like to try the 21 mile Loch Leven Circuit, or feed into the Oban to Fort William section of the Caledonian Way.
In the winter Glencoe mountain & the Nevis Range are skiing/snowboarding venues.
Kayakers have their choice of lochs to paddle around.
Fort William & the Jacobite Express (Hogwart's Express for Harry Potter fans) is just a 25 minute drive. Other places of interest are Oban (1 hour) Skye (just over 2 hours) & Loch Ness ( 1 hour & 15 minutes).
The area has a rich & sometimes gruesome history. The name Glencoe will forever be associated with the massacre of the MacDonald clan in February 1692. The clan chief Maclain is buried on Eilean Munde (the Burial Isle) which is the largest of the 3 islands visible from Spring Croft, looking west along Loch Leven.
In 1693, just a year after the massacre at Glencoe quarrying for slate began in what became known as Ballachulish. This industry blossomed into a major enterprise lasting 250 years. The quarry finally closed in 1955.
The Glencoe & Ballachulish areas have strong links with the Vikings & early Christianity. The Glencoe Visitor Centre (off the A82) features some very interesting & informative exhibitions explaining the history of the area.
We have worked really hard to make Spring Croft welcoming, comfortable, well equipped & a little quirky!
Spring Croft's kitchen is very well equipped. We provide high quality stainless steel & ceramic pans (including a wok), baking trays & plenty of oven to tableware. We also provide you with little extras, like a slow cooker & a hand blender.
The cottage features canvases by two very talented British artists, Sarah Taylor & Alex Clarke.
Little touches like whale soap dishes, highland cow light pulls, & rock basins just add to it's charm.
We are committed to making the cottage as 'green' as possible. The cottage is very well insulated. We have installed a Nest Learning Thermostat which automatically turns down the central heating & hot water when the cottage is unoccupied. We are also looking into the installation of solar panels in an effort to further reduce our carbon footprint.
